Cleanup Activities in Venezuela
On 18–19 March 2023, youth members of SGI Venezuela (SGIV) carried out environmental remediation activities in several locations.
In Caracas, 70 youth members of SGIV helped to clean up the Caracas Botanical Garden, situated on the Central University of Venezuela (UCV) campus. Joining with 12 young people from the Scout Association of Venezuela, they learned about environmental protection and participated in different activities such as pruning, weeding, planting seeds and separating recyclable materials from garbage. The youth also helped collect leaves for composting in an area where a botany school will be built. The school will house nurseries containing terrestrial and aquatic plants, many of which are endangered.
SGIV members in several other locations throughout the country also held cleanup activities, including a beach cleanup in Anzoátegui State where they collected numerous bags of garbage.
“Seeds of Hope and Action” Exhibition Opens at UCV
Later, on 3 May 2023, the “Seeds of Hope and Action: Making the SDGs a Reality” (SOHA) exhibition, a joint initiative of the SGI and the Earth Charter International to promote ecological awareness, opened at the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences (FaCES) of UCV. The opening ceremony was attended by FaCES Dean Dr. Ángel Reyes, other UCV officials and SGIV General Director Lydia Salas.
At the opening, Dean Reyes commented on the connection between the theme of the exhibition and the human need to link socially with one another. He also spoke about how the exhibition exemplifies positive transformation and the diversity of human culture by showing examples of people making positive impacts in their local areas.
