Sustainable Development Month in Malaysia

  • Sustainability & climate change

Soka Gakkai Malaysia (SGM) designated April as the Month of Sustainable Development, holding the SOHA exhibition and events promoting responsible production and consumption (SDG 12) at the SGM Culture Centre in Cheras, Selangor.

The exhibition was shown from 1–16 April 2023 in English, Bahasa Malaysia and Chinese and viewed by over 2,000 people. In his opening remarks, SGM General Director Koh Sia Feai emphasized that each of us has a crucial role to play in protecting nature and each of us needs to start with changing our own behavior.

The exhibition was officially opened by Yeo Bee Yin, former Minister of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change. In her keynote speech, she spoke about the risks and opportunities posed by climate change.

Leading up to the exhibition, SGM created a series of videos in both English and Chinese called Small Steps Revolution on topics related to the SDGs, in addition to a video about tackling cyberbullying.

On 16 April 2023, SGM also hosted a talk by Kloth Circularity Marketing and Communications Assistant Manager Adelyn Ghwee. Kloth Circularity promotes sustainable fashion and the reduction of textile and plastic waste. In her talk titled “Keep Fabric Out of the Landfills,” Ghwee highlighted the negative environmental impact of the fashion industry and recommended buying fewer clothes and reusing, repurposing and recycling clothes to reduce fabric waste. Some 500 people attended the hybrid event.

A Kloth Cares Bin was also installed at the SGM Culture Centre from 1 April 2023 for people to deposit unwanted clothes and fabric items to be repurposed and recycled, in support of SDG12, which calls for responsible production and consumption.
