On 7 April 2022, the Global Protection Cluster Human Rights Engagement Task Team (GPC HRE TT), led by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and co-chaired by the Lutheran World Federation and SGI, organized a webinar on Human Rights Education in displacement context for the members of the Task Team. Elisa Gazzotti of SGI and HRE TT Co-chair moderated the webinar. In the opening remarks, Valerie Sbovodova of UNHCR and Co-chair of the HRE TT highlighted “a need to draw more attention to human rights education in the displacement context and awareness-raising campaigns among humanitarian actors.”
Speakers included Paulina Tandiono of the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR); Abdelaziz Abdelaziz, Human Rights Adviser to the Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Syria; Kate Turner-Mann, Manager of Capacity Development at the Asia Pacific Forum; and Eka Christiningsih Tanlain of Komnas HAM, which addresses human rights education and displacement.
Tandiono shared, “In humanitarian settings, human rights education can empower rights-holders—especially in situations of vulnerability—to claim and realize their rights and engage in relevant decision-making processes, and humanitarian actors to adopt a human rights-based approach to their work, protect human rights and encourage States and duty-bearers to meet their obligations.”
