From 30 August to 1 September 2024, Soka Gakkai Thailand, in collaboration with Chulalongkorn University and Samyan Mitrtown, organized the “Power of One (Power of You)” activity and exhibition at the Samyan Mitrtown shopping center in Bangkok. This event aimed to raise awareness of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and underscore the critical role of grassroots engagement in advancing sustainable development.
The exhibition, “Seeds of Hope and Action,” a joint initiative of SGI and the Earth Charter International, was on display to highlight the intersection of environmental sustainability, social resilience and individual action for change. The panels were complemented by interactive displays, such as an SDG “wheel,” and several performances and panel discussions were held featuring experts and youth. The multifaceted event demonstrated how individual agency can drive systemic change to address the climate crisis, human security challenges and the broader objectives of the SDGs.

The opening panel discussion, “From SDGs to SSLC: Leadership Competencies for Sustainability,” featured Nakarin Wanakitpaiboon, Chief Executive Officer and Executive Editor of THE STANDARD; Thayart Dechasetthi and Pisan Saengchan, hosts of a popular travel program; and Nantarat Charoenkul, Associate Professor at Chulalongkorn University. The panelists explored ways of cultivating essential leadership qualities for fostering a culture of sustainability and resilience within communities.
Interactive exhibits curated by youth members of Soka Gakkai Thailand presented actionable pathways for addressing environmental and social issues. These displays translated complex global challenges into relatable, practical steps. Individuals also had the opportunity to make their own pledges for action.

The event reinforced how human behavior impacts the environment. One display quantified how reducing tissue paper usage could significantly mitigate deforestation, linking individual habits to broader ecological outcomes.
By mobilizing nearly 20,000 participants and providing a platform for multi-sectoral dialogue, the exhibition exemplified how grassroots organizations can operationalize the SDGs. It reinforced the principle that sustainable development requires broad-based participation and a shared commitment to collective progress. This initiative also emphasized the transformative potential of individual and collective efforts in achieving the SDGs.
Soka Gakkai Thailand plans to continue showcasing this initiative in other parts of Thailand.
