In view of World Refugee Day on 20 June and the 10th anniversary of the United Nations Declarations on Human Rights Education and Training (2011), The Global Protection Cluster Task Team on Human Rights Engagement hosted a webinar titled, “Human Rights Education in Humanitarian Settings: Challenges and Opportunities.”
The webinar was held on 17 June and was moderated by Elisa Gazzotti of Soka Gakkai International (SGI) who serves as co-chair of the Task Team. Some key points shared during the webinar included how human rights education is an essential tool to empower rights-holders to claim and exercise their rights, to enhance the protection of displaced persons, and foster social cohesion. Furthermore, by seeing the stark realities of displaced communities, it was also stressed that it is important to recognize existing gaps and seek solutions to ensure refugees can fully realize their potential.
Speakers included representatives from the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), UNICEF’s Makani programme (“my space” in Arabic) in Jordan, and Overseas Development Institute (ODI).
