SGI Joins Global Ethical Stocktake in Italy Marking 10 Years Since Laudato Si’ Encyclical

  • Environment & Sustainability

On 1 October 2025, more than 30 religious leaders from around the world gathered to discuss the roles of faith communities in addressing the escalating climate crisis at Borgo Laudato Si’, a space created by the Vatican in Castel Gandolfo, Italy. The discussion took place within the framework of the Global Ethical Stocktake (GES), an initiative promoting global ethical dialogue on climate action ahead of COP30, the UN annual conference on climate change.

At the invitation of the Laudato Si’ Movement, Nobuyuki Asai of SGI joined the event. Notable participants included Marina Silva, Minister of Environment and Climate Change of Brazil, and Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland and co-leader of the GES Regional Dialogue in Europe.

Participants had been asked to research the impact of climate on a particular species and imagine its feelings in advance of the event. Asai was asked to present on the dragonfly. He discovered that in southwestern Japan, a Taiwanese species is rapidly replacing native dragonflies without public awareness of this fact. He commented in the discussion that human society would be critically and suddenly changed if biodiversity continues to deteriorate due to climate change.

From 1–3 October, Asai also participated in the Raising Hope Conference, marking the 10th anniversary of Laudato Si’, the key encyclical on protecting life and the environment authored by the late Pope Francis. His Holiness Pope Leo XIV joined some 1,000 participants at the conference, which also attracted thousands of online viewers. During small group discussions, Asai shared SGI’s climate action initiatives, including the 2024 Future Action Festival. On 2 October, he also offered a Buddhist perspective on the protection of nature during an interfaith prayer session.
